THE FUTURE OF IRON AND EARTH IN SASKATCHEWAN

Just as Canada was signing the Paris Climate Treaty this spring, the LEAP Manifesto was continuing to generate discussion about renewable energy and a new national economic strategy based on shifting away from the fossil fuel and extractive industries. The NDP convention this year amplified the relevance of LEAP even further. At the same time emerged the unlikely voices of oil sands workers as part of Iron and Earth, a solutions-based initiative aimed at boosting Canada’s renewable energy industry. Read more!


A POSTAL SERVICE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

“It used to be almost every postal worker would walk their route,” says Tony Rogers, president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) Nova Local. “Postal workers would hop on a bus and make their deliveries. The lowest carbon footprint possible.”

Now all but seven out of 200 routes in metro Halifax are entirely motorized, and this day and age that is just plain wrong, Rogers says. Read more!


LET'S HATE NAFTA LIKE WE USED TO

In the wake of Britain’s shocking vote to leave the European Union, a recent polls shows that only 1 in 4 Canadians believe that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is good for the country.

This poll was timed to coincide with the “Three Amigos” summit in Ottawa which brings together its signatories, Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The three leaders agreed to further liberalize NAFTA’s country of origin rules despite the lack of popular support for the trade agreement. Read more!


MINIMUM WAGES AS ECONOMIC STIMULUS

The Alberta Federation of Labour has an excellent minimum wage campaign, called “15 is fair”. I provided some research support for a paper they produced on the positive economic impact of increasing minimum wages, which you can read in full here, but I wanted to share some of the key points.
