Petitioning Rt. Honorable Prime Minister of Canada, John McCallum Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, CBC
With an International Student community of almost 300,000 students in Canada, one would expect the Canadian Government to do all it can to ensure considering them at par with foreign applicants in terms of extreme likeliness to be economically established successfully in Canada. They are young, have studied here, know the system and are willing to contribute to Canada's economy and pay taxes.
Lately, International Students have been left behind in this competitive race as the former Conservative Government made it mandatory for International Students wishing for permanent immigration, to be chosen through the Express Entry System. Because of this, they would now have to compete in a point-based scoring system which they may never be able to achieve without a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
On the contrary, International Students are already an essential part of the local labor force as they are filling up the most required labor gap of Canada i.e. the young and locally educated work force.
Before this, International Students had the advantage of immigrating permanently through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). The previous CEC for International Students was based on three pillars: Canadian Education, Adequate Language Proficiency in English and/or French and the Canadian Work Experience.
The new Liberal Government and Immigration Minister John McCallum has promised making permanent immigration into Canada easier for International Students. As these deliberations are underway, the fate of all these students still hangs in balance.
The flip-side of this situation is that if Canada does not make a move in this direction, fewer students will be looking at Canada for higher studies in the future.
It is a well-researched and proven fact that International Students are one of the top contributors to the Canadian GDP and economy at large.

This petition seeks to make the voices of all our Canadian International Students heard in front of relevant decision-making authorities. International Students help both fund this country’s education programs as well are willing to contribute economically and through taxes towards Canada's prosperity.
