JUSTICE FOR ASHA - puppy thrown 6 feet into the air to land on pavement

THE PETITION:
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that you charge and prosecute, to the fullest extent of the law (by indictment under the Criminal Code of Canada), the 18-year-old arrested after being seen in a video tossing a German Shepherd puppy 6 feet into the air. Prosecuting this person is in the public interest. If the alleged perpetrator is charged and subsequently convicted, we request that he be given a significant sentence, including appropriate intervention (risk assessment and treatment specifically targeting animal abuse), and a lifetime ban on owning animals.

BACKGROUND:
Video shows the puppy, named Asha by rescuers, being thrown into the air and landing on pavement. She is now paralyzed. Asha is enroute to a veterinary clinic in Winnipeg and will be further assessed at that time. The cruelty inflicted upon Asha is a crime of violence and must therefore be taken very seriously. The video shows that after Asha landed on the pavement she was crying in pain, but the perpetrator laughed and walked away, leaving her to suffer.

There is a link between animal abuse and other crimes, including violence toward humans. Thus, animal abusers are known to pose a threat to both animals and humans. Failing to halt the cycle of abuse with appropriate intervention will just allow the violence to continue. This person is young, and this is the time in his life when intervention will be most effective.

Denunciation and deterrence, both specific and general, is paramount in animal cruelty cases to demonstrate that this type of violent crime is completely unacceptable in a civilized society. Regardless of whether the individual in the video has addictions issues or other difficulties in his life, or lives on a reserve (of which I am not certain, but which may apparently be the case), Criminal Code legislation applies across Canada. Please enforce it. Asha is an innocent puppy who obviously trusted this person when he was carrying her and did not deserve to suffer such cruelty.
