  2. B) Donate it to charity

  3. C) Go on the wildest spending spree of your life

  4. D) Throw it in the garbage

We’re going to go out on a limb and guess that not a lot of you chose “D”. But as a country, that’s exactly what we’re doing.

Worse, it’s not cash we’re throwing away, it’s food. Despite Canadian children going to bed hungry and shortages at food banks across the country, a full 40 percent of all food in Canada, $31 billion worth, goes uneaten every year.

At Huffington Post Canada and Change.org Canada, we believe there is now an opportunity to finally end this madness. We think that because you’ve told us so.

At HuffPost Canada, our readers have shown deep and growing interest in the debate around food waste. More and more of you are aware of this shameful reality, and are appalled by it. We agree, and want to help -- we believe journalism shouldn’t simply be about reporting on all the world’s problems; sometimes, journalism can be about finding solutions.

At Change.org we’ve seen tens of thousands of you take action on food waste -- demands for governments, grocers and restaurants to finally do something about it have been growing louder and louder. And as always, our job is to help you create the change you want to see.

That’s why we’re teaming up to help you tackle food waste in Canada once and for all.

Over the coming weeks and months, we’ll be featuring loads of grassroots campaigns, stories, videos, news articles and editorial content all dedicated to the same goal: making more Canadians aware of the problem, and together finding solutions to fix it.

On Change.org Canada, you’ll be able to follow a movement organised by HuffPost Canada featuring many petitions on food waste -- some local, some national; some to governments, some to companies. Please take a moment to look them over, or if you’ve personally encountered food waste somewhere consider starting your own petition.

On The Huffington Post Canada, you’ll find a host of blog posts, articles and videos all related to the collective mission we’re undertaking along with all Canadians to make the inexcusable waste of so much food a thing of the past. For a taste, check out this article Josh recently published.

The name of our food waste campaign is "Reclaim," which means to recover what has been lost. In this context, it has a double meaning: reclaiming our deep appreciation for Earth’s magnificent bounty on which all our lives depend, and reclaiming the power of citizens to drive real change.
