This fall is going to be intense. The Trudeau Liberals’ consultations on many key issues are going to wrap up in the next few months - and then the government will make massive decisions that will shape our country for a generation.
Reject the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), or ratify it? Make every vote count, or let the promise of electoral reform die? Lead a bold climate plan, or build more pipelines? On those issues, and many others, the government will show us their plans this fall.
The Leadnow community is working together for a strong democracy, fair economy and clean environment for all generations. It’s essential that the government hears from people like you - and on issue after issue, you’ve been calling for lasting change.
In a few days we’ll send you a big update on the Leadnow campaign plan for the fall. But first - let’s look back at five great things you’ve done in just the last little while:
1. You picked up clipboards and collected signatures for the Vote Better campaign for proportional representation at events across the country. One small team inspired 368 people to sign up in a single day.
2. Hundreds of you called 90 MPs across Canada to express outrage after the federal government issued permits for the destructive site C dam, and you donated thousands to help First Nations communities continue the fight. You raised $8,800 for a First Nations’ legal defence fund, and $6,500 to help a bus of First Nations elders go to Ottawa to speak directly to politicians at crucial hearings in September.
3. Your donations paid for websites, videos and online ads that have already reached tens of thousands across Canada - educating people about the dangers of the TPP, and the promise of proportional representation.
4. Thousands of you are turning out to the government’s consultations on the national climate plan, the TPP, electoral reform and Kinder Morgan pipeline. Just last week over a thousand of you gave us written comments that we brought to a Kinder Morgan pipeline consultation.
5. Dozens of you have been calling your fellow members of the Leadnow community to give them key information about the consultations and encourage those thousands of people to attend.
This government is under intense pressure to maintain the economic and political power of a few, and you’re building the democratic muscles we all need to create lasting change.
Not only that, but your work is adding to the great work being done by coalitions and networks of groups across the country on all of these issues.
In a few days we’ll follow up with major plans for the fall, informed by input from thousands of you. But for now, we just want to say:
Thanks for all you do.
With hope and respect,
Jamie, Amara, Rachel, Rodrigo, Francis, and Chloe on behalf of the Leadnow.ca team
