
WHY TRUDEAU IS NO FRIEND OF LABOUR

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was given a standing ovation at the 2nd Unifor convention in Ottawa yesterday. But not all Unifor members were cheering on the love-in between the Prime Minister and their national union president, Jerry Dias. There are plenty of Canadian workers already fed-up with business-as-usual and inaction during a crisis.
After ten months in power, the Trudeau Liberals are presiding over a series of major crimes and fiascos on the labour front that they could help resolve in favour of hundreds of thousands of workers through decisive action. Instead, major corporations, Harper-appointed wreckers in the public service, and employers are reaping the rewards. Here are six quick reasons why labour has no business holding a Liberal love-in. Ontario’s Changing Workplaces Review (CWR) is long overdue. The last time Ontario labour relations were overhauled was under the Mike Harris government. After years of pressure, the Liberals have improved some employment standards, but there has been no overhaul of the “Open for Business” labour laws of the Harris years.
The CWR’s interim report admits that something has to change to free millions of Ontario workers from the trap of low-wage, unsafe, or unstable employment that has become the new normal in our province. Read more!
Over the past months, the dispute between Canada Post (CP) and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has garnered attention, both for how a labour stoppage will effect Canadians, as well as how the current negotiations form a bellwether for the future of good jobs. But what has perhaps slipped to the wayside are discussions around modernizing CP without succumbing to precarity, service reduction, and gradual privatization.
