The new Canadian 'no-fly' regime

Dear friends,

The first blog in our national security series, 'A Different Shade of Green Paper' is up and waiting for you.

Check out "The new Canadian 'no-fly' regime" by clicking here.

Bill C-51 modified the Canadian 'no-fly' regime to be more like the US model.

While it is next to impossible for you to gain access to your own listing, the Act allows your listing to be shared with foreign governments, with no statutory limits on how that information can be used.

This gives you some indication as to why Canadian courts have recognized security watch lists as 'Kafkaesque'.

Yet, it is not the case that there may never be justification for preventing someone from boarding a plane.

The question is, how and on what grounds should this be done? Click here to read our analysis.

On another note, thanks for taking our national security survey! Hundreds of people responded, and we are using that information to help guide which blog posts come out next. We should have another one for you shortly.

Talk soon,

Micheal Vonn, Policy Director
and the BCCLA team
