On Tuesday, the Trudeau government approved the Petronas liquefied fracked gas terminal -- a massive project that would become one of the single biggest sources of climate pollution in the entire country -- and I’m feeling desperate.[1]
Extreme forest fires in western Canada are now a yearly occurrence. Droughts in places like Guatemala, my country of birth, are now the norm. Climate refugees now rival war refugees in numbers.[2-4]
For my generation, climate change is not a distant threat. It’s our daily reality -- and that’s terrifying. The carbon emissions coming from this project will make it unlikely, if not impossible, for Canada to keep its climate commitments.[5]
That’s why I see the government approval of the Petronas project as a betrayal to my generation, a betrayal to the First Nations protecting the land, water and salmon, and a betrayal to voters who called for climate action.
But the Petronas project is not a done deal. It can still be stopped. We are in touch with our partners in Northern BC to talk about next steps to stop this project. There are hundreds of thousands of Leadnow members across the country, and if we come together, we can still stop this project and hold the government to its promises.
Will you donate as little as $5, $10 or $20 to keep this campaign going?
Just like BC First Nations and local communities essentially stopped the Enbridge Northern Gateway even after it was approved, we can still put a stop to this dangerous project. This is more than just the fight for the future of a project. It’s about the fight against the biggest emergency our civilization has ever faced: climate change.
Prime Minister Trudeau promised to make Canada into a climate leader -- and I believed in him. But now he’s keeping Harper’s weak climate targets and approving the very projects Harper supported by gutting our environmental laws.
The math is simple. If we are serious about climate change, we must stop expanding the fossil fuel industry. To do that, we’ll have to work together.
Today, my hope lies in you and the Leadnow community.
Together, we helped stop the Enbridge pipeline, stop some of Harper’s worst legislation, and even helped defeat Harper himself.
Now we need to work together again to hold the Trudeau government accountable to its promises. If they won’t take climate change and First Nations rights and title seriously, we must mobilize to make them change their tune.
