Good morning and happy Saturday to you!

There are so many important things happening right now in relation to civil liberties that I am emailing you about two issues this morning.

The National Security Consultation is coming to town

This Monday, October 17 the federal government's National Security Consultation is coming to Vancouver.

BCCLA Policy Director Micheal Vonn will be presenting as one of four national security experts from 2:00-4:00 pm. We're planning to live stream her comments, so follow us on Facebook to catch the whole thing.

If you'd like to attend in person, there is an open mic session from 5:30-7:30 pm. Get more info. Note- you'll need a piece of government issued photo ID to get in.

If you're not in Vancouver, the consultation is coming to Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, and Halifax throughout next week. Find out more here.

Finally, if you missed it, we're on blog #3 in our "A Different Shade of Green Paper" series, intended to help you create your submissions to the federal consultation. Check out the series here.

If you can't make it in person, you can make your submissions to the consultation online. Check out our blog series for details.

Make the call to end second-class citizenship

Call your senator

In 2015 Bill C-24 turned tens of thousands of Canadians with dual citizenship into second-class citizens with fewer rights. Our community won a huge victory when the new government moved to repeal these changes with Bill C-6.

This is an important step, but the bill hasn’t been passed yet - and there's an important issue that it doesn't address.

Senators are scheduled to vote on Bill C-6 (second reading) on Tuesday.

Can you use our quick tool to call your senator and ask them to fix this crucial issue, then pass the bill?

It just takes a couple of minutes, and we've provided some talking points!

That's all for today!

Talk soon,

Charlotte Kingston,
BCCLA Director of Community Engagement
