Trump: What you can do

Paov,

I’m seriously concerned about your online privacy and freedom of expression after last week’s election.

Soon, President-elect Donald Trump will have full control of the NSA – the most powerful state surveillance system on earth. With his authoritarian streak, growing list of enemies, and desire to implement widespread censorship on the Web, this is far from a distant threat.

I’m writing today to ask for your help. Please chip in $5 so we can protect your online privacy... and push back against a superpower that’s outspoken about censorship and control.

Trump’s values are not Canadian values. He wants to dramatically expand the NSA, the American surveillance behemoth, to spy on each of us,1 he’s called for “closing parts of the Internet”,2 and he has a complete disdain for the most fundamental safeguard for an open Internet: Net Neutrality.3

For far too long, Canada’s spy agencies have worked hand in glove with the U.S. NSA and the Five Eyes nations – an unholy alliance whistleblower Edward Snowden described as “a supranational intelligence organization that doesn’t answer to the laws of its own countries.”4

With information sharing between our government and the U.S., we could see our data used to discriminate against us while crossing the border.5 We could see voices who oppose Trump silenced by intimidation, the censorship of our allies, and we fear what could happen to the most vulnerable members of our society under an oppressive surveillance regime.6

Your OpenMedia team has spent years holding the government accountable for out of control spying. We faced the worst Stephen Harper could throw at us – and now we need to rise to meet this new challenge before Trump takes office.

We’ve done this before, and we can do it again – with your support.

I know this is an uncertain time. But if we work together, we will protect our basic rights.

WILL YOU STAND WITH US TODAY?

Yours in solidarity,

Laura Tribe
