Friends,

Monday night was an evening of beauty, strength, and resilience. Over 2,000 people in more than 50 communities stood united against the Kinder Morgan tar sands pipeline for the national day of #KMvigils. From coast to coast to coast, people stood in unity to tell Prime Minister Trudeau that he needs to honour his promises on climate action and Indigenous rights by rejecting Kinder Morgan.

Today we need to lean into our power and keep the pressure on. Can you send an email to PM Trudeau and his cabinet to tell them to reject Kinder Morgan?

Here are some of my favourite photos from this immensely powerful day.

As I stood shoulder to shoulder with over 100 people that had joined the Toronto vigil to stop Kinder Morgan, I took a moment to reflect on how far this fight has come. The struggle against Kinder Morgan started off as a local one led by the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, since then it has grown to include communities across British Columbia. Monday was a reminder that today, resistance against Kinder Morgan stretches from coast to coast in Canada. Indeed, it unites a national movement for climate justice and Indigenous rights.

When I got home, photos poured in from Halifax, Charlottetown, and Sackville on the East Coast; from La Pocatière, Montreal, and Quebec City in French Canada. In Ontario, from Sudbury, Hamilton, and Thunder Bay. In the Prairies from Saskatoon, Winnipeg, and Regina. In Alberta, cities closest to the heart of the tar sands in Edmonton and Calgary. And finally, from over 12 communities in British Columbia ranging from a crowd of 200 people in Victoria, to an intimate group gathered in front of a library at my Alma Matter, UBC. That’s just to name a few -- a few hours into the night and I couldn’t even keep count of the dozens of communities across Canada standing up against Kinder Morgan.

I feel prepared now for the Kinder Morgan decision -- more so than I have been before -- because I know that, no matter what happens, we will be ready to fight and hold Prime Minister Trudeau accountable to his promises.

We still have a chance to send a message to the Prime Minister. Send him and his cabinet ministers an e-mail telling them to reject this pipeline.

Thank you for standing with me in this movement. We will keep you posted with the latest updates on the fight against Kinder Morgan.

In solidarity,

Atiya
