Animal Justice intervenes before the Supreme Court

In a landmark moment for animal law in Canada, Animal Justice was granted the right to make oral arguments in a Supreme Court appeal on November 9th in Ottawa. This critical appeal will determine whether all forms of sexual abuse of animals remain illegal under Canadian law. This makes Animal Justice the first-ever animal protection organization that will... argue in person before Canada's highest court. Animal Justice will argue that it must remain a crime to sexually abuse animals in any way, shape, or form. Learn more about this important case.

Voters send animal-friendly MPs to Parliament

Last month we let you know about Humane Voters Canada, a new Animal Justice Canada Legislative Fund project that worked to elect candidates who are supportive of animal protection. Humane Voters endorsed eight candidates from all parties based on their records as animal protection champions, and worked to help them win. We're happy to report that nearly all of them were elected last week! Read more about why we think Canada's new Parliament is poised to take animal issues seriously.

Woman charged criminally for giving water to dehydrated pigs

Toronto animal advocate Anita Krajnc was recently charged with the criminal offence of mischief. Her alleged crime? An act of compassion. Anita saw hundreds of pigs crammed into a sweltering truck on their way to slaughter. So she held up a water bottle, and gave them a drink. Her act of compassion towards animals who had likely never known human kindness is considered criminal, rather than heroic, by law enforcement officials. Animal Justice stands with Anita. Read more in this Huffington Post piece by Anna Pippus, our director of farmed animal advocacy.

Helping potbelly pigs stay in their home

Animal Justice has been making frontpage headlines in B.C. lately to raise awareness that pigs are every bit as deserving of compassion as our beloved cats and dogs. We're fighting to help Athena and Vishnu, a pair of potbelly pigs, stay in their home in Victoria, B.C. City officials say the pigs are illegal under a bylaw that prohibits keeping animals "normally raised for food". But animals like cows, dogs, rabbits, chickens, and pigs can also be loving companions. Learn more about our fight to save Athena and Vishnu!
