Great discussions this past February! Here are the five upcoming events for March:
March 3rd @ 7PM - The Bernie Sanders Phenomenon
Sanders and his call for socialism has opened the door for the discussion on social reforms (universal health care, free education, etc) in the US and in Canada, and how they can be paid for under capitalism. Our discussion will focus on how possible these reforms are while maintain the status quo or, if a greater break with capitalism is necessary. See link: http://bit.ly/1Qapupr
March 10th @ 7PM - The Philosophy of Marxism
Trotsky's 'ABC of Materialist Dialectics' is a brilliant and short explanation of Marxist philosophy. It was written to outline how Marxism differs from traditional idealistic philosophy. As opposed to pragmatism and empiricism, Trotsky defended dialectical materialism as a richer, fuller, more comprehensive view of society and life in general. See link: http://bit.ly/1QsB62R
March 17th @... 7PM - The Lessons of the Spanish Revolution
The Spanish Revolution of the 1930's offered numerous examples of the disastrous foreign policy of the Third International. Trotsky analyzed these policies to provide lessons for future revolutionaries. Our discussion will focus on an essay produced as part of his analysis. See link: http://bit.ly/1QTHReu
March 24th @ 7PM - The Rise of Stalinism
Most on the left would recognize the Russian Revolution as one of the most significant events for working class emancipation in history. However, the rise of Stalin is often treated as a natural consequence of the revolution, an opinion which Trotsky vehemently disagreed with and dedicated his life to analyzing. Our discussion will focus on some of the class forces that allowed Stalinism to persist. See link: http://bit.ly/1jMQdMp
March 31st @ 7PM - Marxism and Anarchism
The divide between Marxists and Anarchists can often seem irrelevant to an outside observer. In this discussion, we will review the philosophical basis for this division by analyzing the original conflict between Marx and Bakunin. All events will be held at QV Cafe (1701 Government St). The links lead to the literature being discussed - prior reading is encouraged but not required. Discussion is open to everybody in a safe environment and every opinion will be heard.
