Dear PAOV,

Did you know that Canada's animal protection laws are the worst in the western world? Our animal cruelty laws haven't been meaningfully updated since the 1950s, and we're failing animals as a result.

But on Monday, Parliament will debate a new bill that could finally bring our laws into the 21st century. MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith put forward Bill C-246, the Modernizing Animal Protections Act, which would:

  • update animal cruelty laws so abusers won't escape criminal punishment;
  • ban cat and dog fur, which many of us are shocked to learn is not already illegal;
  • ban the cruel practice of shark finning.

Monday's debate is just the first step on a long road to passing... this legislation. As usual, the industries and special interests that oppose stronger laws for animals are already trying to block Bill C-246 from becoming law.

We urgently need your help. I just emailed my MP and asked her to support Bill C-246 -- it only took a minute! Can you do the same?
