Summer Labour Films

Summer Labour Films r1 ...

There's something about August and films, isn't there? And not just blockbusters but labour films too. So here's some news we thought fit the season.

Min Sook Lee is a name you almost certainly recognize. You may even have been in her workshop at the LabourStart conference in Toronto last May. She's been a feature on the labour-friendly arts scene across the country for a while now.

Migrant Dreams is her latest film and it is nothing less than wonderful. And moving and...well, you just have to see it.

It likely won't make your local cinema unless you live in a large city but your union, film club, church or your you-name-it can arrange a viewing. To organize a screening just submit a booking request to Cinema Politica through THIS FORM.

If you’re interested in having the director Min Sook Lee or any of the workers featured in the film speak at your event you can indicate this in the Comments field.

Since we're on the subject of films, Pride is the story of the solidarity work done by a British LGBT group during the epic miners strike in the 1980's. If you missed its theatrical release it's now on TMN, Movie Central and a number of streaming services. There's a LabourStart connection here too as Mike Jackson, one of the LGBT organizers depicted in the film, is a LabourStart supporter.

Speaking of LabourStart, Cynthia Pandev is a Toronto filmmaker who not only attended the Toronto LabourStart conference but made a short film about it. It's a tour of the conference really. You can find her film HERE.
Finally, August means (sorry) that November is on the way. Along with snow November brings the Canadian Labour International Film Festival. CLiFF is unique in that it provides a 'film fest in a box' to local groups across the country. You just provide a room and an audience.

There may already be a CliFF event in your area but if not they make it easy for you to hold one. More info on CLiFF can be found HERE.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and don't forget to send us your Labour Day photos.

In Solidarity,

Derek Blackadder
