Green Jobs in the Headlines

The High Road to a Green Economy - News from California

A new report from UC Berkeley Labor Center finds that over 500,000 people are employed in the Green Economy in California.

The report, The Link Between Good Jobs and a Low Carbon Future, was published by the Donald Vial Center for Employment in the Green Economy at UC Berkeley Labor Centre. The report found “Almost all the large-scale renewable projects are built under project labor agreements, which provide union pay rates, health insurance and pension benefits.” Researchers are calling this the “high road” to low carbon economy.

The report also found that California’s climate policy, the Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS), is directly linked to the creation of good, green jobs in that state.

Has China Reached ‘Peak Coal’?

Last week The Guardian reported on a new study from the London School of Economics with this headline:

“China's coal peak hailed as turning point in climate change battle. Study by economists say achievement by world’s biggest polluter may be a significant milestone, rather than a blip”

Eminent climate economist and report co-author, Lord Nicholas Stern, noted that China is ahead of its climate goals and may have reached a ‘peak coal’ turning point in 2014.

Patricia Espinosa, the incoming executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change commented, “It underlines how ambitious and deliberate policies to shift away from highly polluting fuels to cleaner energy sources can deliver global climate benefits and national improvements in health and indeed in people’s lives.”

Unions Have an Important Role in Ensuring Green Jobs are Good Jobs

In a July article, In These Times looked at union efforts to organize the clean energy sector in the US. Workers in the green economy can face the same issues as workers in any sector. As the article explains, unions can have an important role in ensuring workers are fairly compensated and work conditions are safe. Read the article by Kate Aronoff here.
