Dear PAOV,

I have an important update in a case we first told you about a few weeks ago—a dangerous copyright lawsuit filed by the Vancouver Aquarium that could be used to silence Canadian films, videos, and undercover investigations into animal abuse.

The B.C. Court of Appeal just agreed to let Animal... Justice intervene in the lawsuit. We'll be there to fight for the rights of animal advocates who film and expose hidden animal cruelty.

Legal experts are calling the case an abusive attempt to silence the film Vancouver Aquarium Uncovered, which criticizes keeping whales and dolphins in captivity. But the Aquarium won a partial victory against the film in April when a court ordered that some of its scenes must be removed.

From blockbusters like Blackfish to undercover footage shot by brave investigators on factory farms, videos and films about animals are absolutely critical to sparking the legal and political change that animals so desperately need.

The stakes are extremely high. If the court doesn't overturn the Vancouver Aquarium's victory, well-funded animal use industries could use the case to silence undercover investigations, films, online videos, and news stories through bogus copyright lawsuits.

That's why Animal Justice will be there at the appeal—to protect the rights of animal advocates to film and expose animal abuse to the public. We'll let you know what happens next.

Thank you for all you do,

Camille Labchuk
Executive Director
