Not a word about events to the south of us, I promise. Just good stuff that might make our little parts of the world a tiny bit better. And give us a chance to recharge.
LabourStart has always been a big fan of the Canadian International Film Festival (CLiFF). In larger centres CLiFF volunteers rent full-sized cinemas and show worker- and union-themed films to audiences of thousands.
But it's in smaller towns and cities like Surrey and Yellowknife and Lethbridge and Peterborough and Charlottetown that CLiFF really shines. By providing local union film enthusiasts with a 'festival in a box' CLiFF turns libraries and union halls and Legion bars into festival cinemas for an evening.
To find the CLiFF fest nearest you just go HERE. And if you're thinking that you might want to organize a labour film fest for your neck of the woods (all you need is a suitable space and a projector) see how to make it happen HERE.
Rise Up! bills itself as the Canadian 'digital archive of feminist activism'. It's a lot more than that though. It's a fascinating online space and a great way to spend some time getting energized.
And it has, as it should, a whole lot of working class content. About women's struggles with and within their unions.
Take a peek for sure, but also pass along the link. Rise Up! is looking for contributors as well as readers. Stories of struggles won (and lost, if only temporarily) need to be saved so we can build on them. Documents moldering in garages and basements and storage lockers need to be preserved. This is a huge and hugely important project that deserves our support.
