CoDev's 2017 International Solidarity Award r1 ... CoDevelopment Canada is pleased to announce that The Canadian Centre for International Justice has been selected as the recipient of the CoDev 2017 International Solidarity Award! The award will be presented at the upcoming International Solidarity Dinner on June 17th at the Maritime Labour Centre. Megan Ashbury presenting the 2015 International Solidarity Award to Byron Cruz on behalf of Sanctuary Health. The Canadian Centre for International Justice (CCIJ) is an organization that envisions a world where human rights violators are held accountable and survivors of atrocities find healing through justice. CCIJ supports and assists people seeking justice for serious human rights violations and engages with Canadians through education and awareness programming in the following ways:
  • Taking action on behalf of people in Canada seeking justice for human rights violations
  • Pursuing human rights violators with a connection to Canada in the courts and other forums
  • Taking part in legal action that seeks to hold corporations accountable for human rights violations
  • Strengthening international law by conducting research, educating lawyers, and advocating changes to law and policy
CoDev chose CCIJ as its 2017 International Solidarity Award recipient for this important work and more specifically for its role in the Tahoe Resources case in British Columbia. Several Guatemalan men who were injured during the suppression of a peaceful protest at Tahoe’s Guatemalan mine brought the case, which the company tried to have dismissed.

Recently, the BC Court of Appeal rejected Tahoe’s efforts to have the case dismissed, making it the first time a Canadian appellate court has permitted a lawsuit to advance a case against a Canadian company for alleged human rights violations.

The plaintiffs are supported in Canada by a legal team from CCIJ and the law firm of Camp Fiorante Matthews Mogerman, and in Guatemala by the Guatemalan Centre for Legal, Environmental and Social Action (CALAS).
