Friends,
Today, we were planning to launch something special, but our plans went out the window when we saw the news that Donald Trump was preparing to pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement.
He just finished his speech, and what’s clear is that other world leaders -- including Justin Trudeau -- must now stand up and take action to confront the climate crisis. We cannot settle for empty statements or the status quo.
2016 was the hottest year ever, and a huge wake up call. But 2017 is a fire alarm. If the world’s largest economy abandons climate action, we must all recommit to... it — most of all, heads of state who control the future of international climate action, such as PM Trudeau.
We don’t have to convince Donald Trump that his actions are wrong. In fact, just the opposite: we need to convince everyone who disagrees with him to increase and deepen their work to stop him. Add your name to this declaration of support for the Paris Agreement and stronger climate action -- our friends in New York will deliver your message to the UN headquarters next week.
Even though Trump and the United States just took a huge step backwards today, the climate movement is more organised than ever, and we will stand strong.
With hope,
Atiya
P.S. On Monday, we will release the ‘Raise a Paddle’ film on the journey from the Pacific Islands to the tar sands, which makes an incredible case for why this work is so crucial. Watch the trailer to get a glimpse. You won’t want to miss the full film -- it's the kind of thing we really need at a time like this to ground ourselves in the fight for a livable planet.
