Urge your Senators to protect children & farmworkers

Dear PAOV,

“If EPA isn’t going to do their job, those of us in Congress must do it for them.”

That was the bottom-line message of Senator Tom Udall yesterday, when he introduced new legislation to ban the brain-harming pesticide, chlorpyrifos.

This is a tremendous milestone for kids, farmworkers and rural families, and you helped make it happen. Let’s keep building the momentum! Urge your Senators to co-sponsor the bill to finally take chlorpyrifos off the market.

It was late March when EPA’s new administrator, Scott Pruitt, rejected the recommendations of his agency’s own scientists and blocked a planned ban of this widely used, neurotoxic insecticide. Outrage was immediate and widespread.

Pediatricians called the decision “deeply alarming,” and PAN and our partner groups — including children’s health and farmworker advocates — called the agency to task for so clearly putting pesticidemaker Dow Chemical’s bottom line ahead of science, workers and kids. We also immediately took EPA back to court.

Now Congress is stepping up where Scott Pruitt failed.

Urge your Senators to add their names to Senator Udall’s “Protect Children, Farmers and Farmworkers from Nerve Agent Pesticides Act.”

Scientists have known for many years that this chemical damages children’s developing brains — reducing IQs, changing brain architecture and increasing risk of learning disabilities and disorders. “Chlorpyrifos has been shown beyond any shadow of a doubt to damage the brains of children,” said Dr. Philip Landrigan, a pediatrician at Mt. Sinai Hospital, at Tuesday’s press conference announcing the bill.

After years of lawsuits and advocacy by PAN and our partners, EPA was poised to follow the science and withdraw all uses of this chemical in food production. Congress must now do the job the agency will not.

Please ask your Senators to sign onto S1624, today!

Thanks for all you do.
