As Canadians We Need to Tell Nygard to Own Up!
r1 ...
First a quick reminder about our campaign to get Canadian clothing brand Nygard to accept responsibility for what has been done to hundreds of Cambodian women working for one of its suppliers.
Send your protest message to Nygard HERE. And please pass this along. Nygard needs to know that it can’t get off scot-free by blaming the suppliers it chooses when they engage in wage theft.
Many of us live in cities with workers centres. So we know the good work they do with unorganized workers and with the unemployed. The Sudbury Workers Education and Advocacy Centre (SWEAC) is one of them and it needs our help. Despite the (unfortunately) high demand for its services SWEAC has had to reduce it hours because it is short of cash. Those service are important to workers in a big chunk Northern Ontario:
“Thanks SWEAC for helping me get through this ordeal. I was able to keep my job, exercise my rights, and successfully fight for fairness in the workplace. You made a very stressful situation bearable by making me feel supported and educated. You walked me through a very difficult situation and encouraged me along the way. I hope others can find the courage to stand up for themselves; SWEAC would be a good place to start. Thanks again.”
– Former SWEAC client
If you’re able to throw a few bucks their way just go HERE. Better yet, get your local union to make a contribution to SWEAC. And if there’s a workers centre in your neck of the woods then perhaps they could use a contribution too. Let us know if you need help finding the centre in your area or in drafting a motion for a union meeting.
With Trump rolling back Obama’s very modest overtures to Cuba, now’s the time to re-commit to solidarity with Cuban workers. If you are in or near Toronto on 2 September there’s no better way to celebrate Labour Day than by attending A New Reality in Cuba? Canada-Cuba Solidarity Conference, sponsored by too many unions to name and, of course, endorsed by LabourStart Canada. Details HERE.
The Toronto Labour Council has launched the Chinese Workers' Podcast series as a way to reach workers who work in the ‘ethnic economy’ and who have limited English or know little about their rights at work. The hope is that by sharing the stories of Chinese workers who have faced similar situations they will realize that they are not alone in their struggles. Labour Council is working to mobilize them to find possible solutions to their problems at work, including organizing. Check it out HERE and pass it along to anyone who might find it useful.
Last but definitely not least: congrats to the CWA Canada-Halifax Typographical Union members on the way they conducted themselves during their 18 month-long strike. As this mailing is being set up their tentative agreement is still under wraps. Check out the LabourStart Canada Nova Scotia news page HERE for details when they become available.
Thank-you for hanging in right to the end of this message! Enjoy what's left of the summer
In Solidarity,

Derek Blackadder
