It has become tempting in recent years to assume that the rights of women and LGBTI people are no longer up for debate. But the growth in Latin America of
a political movement against “gender ideology”—which is unfavorably contrasted with “Christianity” and “tradition”—should finally put such wishful thinking to rest. If supporters of women and LGBTI people want to defend
the progress that’s been made, they will have to familiarize themselves with the rhetoric of gender ideology before they’re able to rebut it. Because while gender ideology is a fiction,
the threat it poses to the rights of women and LGBTI people is all too real.
