The Fight for 15 - What Next?

When: Tuesday September 26th, 7pm
Where: Steelworkers' Hall, 25 Cecil Street, Toronto.

Jonathan Rosenblum, union activist from Seattle and author of recently published Beyond $15, will be talking about the lessons to be learned from the struggle for $15 in the USA. Rosenblum's experience will be of particular interest to activists in the $15 and Fairness movement in Ontario.

Deena Ladd from the Workers' Action Centre will be talking about the Ontario movement - its successes and what lies ahead. We've won $15 or have we? Where to next?

The focus of this forum will, we hope, go beyond celebrating the very impressive gains made on this front to ask a couple of follow-up questions this victory raised. First, what are the limits of such struggles? Do they develop larger capacities that can in turn be built on?... (Or, put differently, in what circumstances have they or might they do so?). Second, and directly related, where do we go from here? Will the lobbying continue parallel to, but separate from the official trade union movement and party politics? Will the issue have a role in the upcoming municipal election? Will it affect struggles for universal programs that are becoming as important as wage struggles (erosion of healthcare, access to childcare, pensions in retirement)? What stands in the way of the labour movement not just endorsing such campaigns and offering some financial support, but bringing their own members directly in? What impact might this make in the official trade union movement?

Bring your questions and ideas to the forum. Remind others on your lists. And bring a friend or two with you.
