Dr. Ali Darwish was operating on a patient in Hama, Syria, when the hospital he worked at was the target of a chemical attack. As the gas spread throughout the hospital, patients and medical staff had difficulty breathing. Dr. Darwish, a specialist orthopedic surgeon, refused to leave his patient — he continued operating until he collapsed and died from exposure to the gas.
This tragic event shows the immense risk that medical staff face as they deliver life-saving support in Syria. More than 700 medical staff have been killed, sacrificing their lives while working to save others.
Dr. Anas Al-Kassem, an Ontario doctor who works closely with medical staff in Syria, started a petition imploring Prime Minister Trudeau and the United Nations to act now to protect the healthcare staff working to save lives in war-torn Syria.
