REFLECTIONS ON THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION:
100 YEARS LATER
7:00 pm
Victoria Event Centre, 1415 Broad Street
$10
Today we are told that the Russian Revolution was a coup d’etat by a small group of Bolshevik conspirators. Discover why the revolution was, in fact, widely supported by Russians of many political views as well as by people worldwide seeking a better life, the forerunners of today's social movement activists.
Join this discussion on the meaning and impact of the Russian Revolution for global politics and social movements, coinciding with the 100-year anniversary of the revolution of November 7, 1917.
Featuring a presentation by Ben Isitt, historian and author of “From Victoria to Vladivostok: Canada Siberia Expedition, 1917-19,” followed by a discussion, music, drinks, prizes and more!

UNDERSTANDING CIVIL RESISTANCE
November 22, 6:30 to 8:00 pm
Victoria Event Centre, 1415 Broad Street
Confronting social and environmental injustice, civil resistance is an increasingly prominent feature of global politics. This discussion addresses common public misconceptions, including the Middle East and the notion of "nonviolence."
What is civil resistance?
Is it a weapon of the weak?
Can it really work against oppressive regimes?
Must it be "nonviolent"?
