Friends,
As you read this e-mail, the largest open-pit tar sands mine ever proposed is under review: the Teck Frontier project. If built, Teck Frontier would supply tar sands oil directly to export pipelines like Kinder Morgan.
The scariest part is that this review is moving forward without proper consideration for climate change or Indigenous rights. Prime Minister Trudeau promised us that he would change Canada’s environmental assessment process to include these two crucial factors. Let’s hold him to his word. Sign our petition calling on Trudeau and his ministers to give the Teck Frontier mine a real review that includes climate change and Indigenous rights.
The Teck Frontier mine would be a disaster for the climate. It goes against Canada’s national climate plan and Alberta’s tar sands... emissions cap. It also builds the kind of fossil fuel infrastructure that undermines Canada’s commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement.
Teck Frontier is also a dangerous violation of Indigenous rights. This mine would mean the exploitation of lands that the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation has explicitly identified as off limits for tar sands development. This is a clear violation of the Canadian government's international commitments to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The current review process for Teck Frontier is under Stephen Harper’s rules with no assessment of the project’s impacts on climate change or Indigenous rights. Prime Minister Trudeau swore to overhaul this broken review process back in the 2015 election. Let’s speak up to show that we expect him to keep his promise. Demand that Trudeau and his ministers give the Teck Frontier mine a proper review.
We know that a proper review process is enough to stop a destructive project in its tracks. Just recently, a new climate test for pipelines led to TransCanada cancelling its plans for the Energy East tar sands pipeline. If we speak up together, we can make sure that reckless projects like the Teck Frontier Mine are given a real review. Will you help us make sure that Prime Minister Trudeau gets our message?
This is just the first step, 350.org has big plans in the year ahead to expand and strengthen its global campaign to go Fossil Free. This petition is just one piece of the puzzle here in Canada. We will be in touch soon with many more exciting plans.
In respect and peace,
Clayton Thomas-Müller
