My name is China Brotsky. You might have seen an email or two from me before, but mostly I’m behind the scenes managing the budget at SumOfUs.
Before going away to celebrate New Year’s eve with my family, I always do a final check of our budget.
I just finished crunching the numbers for 2018 -- and to fully fund all the important fights we face next year, we need to raise $50,000 by tonight, December 31.

2017 has been tough. Corporations are gaining more power, politicians represent big business and not people like you and me, and racism is on the rise. But we have lots to be proud of thanks to you.
Here’s a quick snapshot of what we achieved because of you:
- A small, brave group of bee defenders took their fight to the European Court of Justice because members like you mobilised in droves to fund the court case.
- Your constant pressure helped thwart the Bayer-Monsanto merger -- which is now way off track.
- Because you spoke up, thousands of corporations stopped advertising on the extreme far right news website Breitbart, and adopted hate speech policies.
- Communities in the US, Canada, and New Zealand stopped bottled water corporations from draining water, our most precious resource, because you kept up the pressure by signing petitions, funding billboards, court cases, and much more!
Wow. In 2017, you showed that people power can deal huge blows to the biggest corporations in the world. And with your help A, we’re hoping to keep building on our efforts. Truth is, there’s just too much at stake in the world in 2018, and we’re not going to give in now.
We are just $50,000 short of of closing our year-end fundraising shortfall and fully funding the most important fights in 2018.

The incredible and visionary work this team does inspires me everyday, and our small but mighty team punches way above its weight. With just 30 people from around the world, our team has run hundreds of game-changing campaigns across the planet this year alone. I could not be prouder.
The work SumOfUs does is because of people like you -- this community is almost entirely funded by small donations from people like you around the planet just chipping in a few dollars here and there to make the world a better place.
We take no money from governments or corporations, and we wouldn’t want to change that. This means, we're entirely independent and able to do the work that needs to be done when it needs to be done.
Having the support from members like you means we can go into 2018 in a strong position, ready to carry out our mission without having to worry about whether we can fund this critical work.
But if we can't reach our goal of $50,000 by today, then one way or another, we'll have to cut back on something we'd otherwise plan to do in 2018.
Just look at some of the huge fights we're facing in the coming year:
- In 2018, we are going to dig down and go big building the grassroots movement of those who stand for our communities and our futures over profit.
- We’re not going to stop until we stop the Bayer-Monsanto merger once and for all. Right now we’re working overtime to make sure this dangerous merger can never see the light of day.
- We’re (still!) saving the bees. Our big win in France is under threat as the pesticide industry is working overtime to find ways to poke loopholes in the neonics ban. But we’ve already won the first round in our lawsuit and will need your help to ensure that the bees are safe.
- We’re standing up for workers rights while keeping corporations like Uber, Facebook and Amazon in check.
That's an exciting list -- but it’s nowhere near exhaustive. We start and run new campaigns everyday, and there will be even more fights that we don't know about yet in 2018. The exciting thing about being independently funded is that we are extremely fast-moving and can pivot to emerging and urgent issues as they come up.
With so much at stake, we can't afford to go into 2018 with a fundraising shortfall that could force us to cut back.
