A Watershed Moment for U.S. Democracy

This month, a three-judge federal panel rendered a verdict that could profoundly alter, and strengthen, how democracy works in the United States. Using a cutting-edge social science technique which showed how votes in hyper-gerrymandered districts were “wasted,” the court ruled, for the first time in history, that a partisan congressional gerrymander could be unconstitutional. The debate is hardly resolved; it’s likely that the U.S. Supreme Court will soon weigh in. But for those who believe that voting rights in the United States must be vigorously defended, 2018 is off to a promising start.
