NAVIGATING ONTARIO'S POLITICAL FRONT GROUPS

Last fall the Facebook page North99 exploded onto the social media scene. It went from starting from scratch in the Fall of 2017 to one of the largest progressive social media accounts in the country almost overnight. It currently has 40,000 likes on Facebook, not quite half as many as Press Progress, but it is growing at nearly three times rate. Its social media memes and posts have by-far the widest circulation on the Left, well beyond any union, organization or progressive campaign. It bills itself as the Left’s version of Ontario Proud and Rebel Media. Read more!


CARLETON UNIVERSITY WORKERS STRIKING TO PROTECT THEIR PENSIONS

Around 850 administrative, technical and library workers at Carleton University began picketing at campus entrances on March 5 as they went on strike to protect their pensions.

The workers are represented by Local 2424 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). The strike followed nineteen days of bargaining since July 2017. Negotiations with the university administration broke off early in the morning of March 5. Read more!


UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE LOSES AT LABOUR BOARD

A few weeks back, I reported on an application before the Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB). The crux of the issue was that the University of Lethbridge was trying to compel the faculty association (FA) to negotiate two collective agreements: one for regular faculty and one for sessionals.

This issue had come to a head because, in the spring of 2017, the government moved faculty collective bargaining mostly under the ambit of the Labour Relations Code. Read more!


AMAZON AND THE NEW TAYLORISM

The latest scandal to emerge from Amazon’s warehouses centers on the company’s newly patented wristband, which gives it the ability to track and record employees’ hands in real time. Some have described the technology as a “dystopian” form of surveillance. Amazon has countered that journalists are engaging in “misguided” speculation. To hear the retail giant tell it, all the device does is move its inventory-tracking equipment from workers’ hands to their wrists — what’s the big deal? Read more!
