The European Union (EU) just banned bee-killing pesticides by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Canada is falling far behind.
Call on Canada to catch up to the EU and protect the bees.
A,
Canada is now falling dangerously behind in the global fight to save the bees.
Last month, the European Union (EU) banned the three major bee-killing neonic pesticides -- and the ban will be enacted by the end of 2018. Meanwhile, Canada will ban only 1 of the 3 bee-killing neonics, and only by 2022.
And make no mistake, Canadian bees need saving. Just last week, CBC reported that beekeepers in New Brunswick are finding that... upward of 80 percent of their bees were dead, and this is a pattern that is repeating.
The Pesticide Management Regulatory Agency, the Canadian government body in charge of banning neonics, is dragging its feet, even though the science from Europe is crystal clear. This is why we need to pressure their bosses, the Health Minister and the Prime Minister to join Europe and save our pollinators.
70% of our food crops are dependent on pollinators like bees. And with mounting and unignorable evidence that neonic pesticides are a huge threat to the health of pollinators, the EU decided on a total ban of bee-killing pesticides, joining France, who is set to ban neonics in September.
Now, Canada needs to follow suit -- the bees can’t afford to wait any longer.
SumOfUs won’t give up until we get neonics banned in Canada. For the last 5 years, members like you have been instrumental in huge wins for the bees like getting Home Depot and Lowe’s to pull neonic products from its shelves and getting one of the three bee-killing neonics, imidacloprid, banned in Canada.
Meanwhile, our members around the world fought every step of the way for the French and EU bans on the bee-killing pesticide. And we won despite giant billion dollar corporations like Bayer, who put up well-financed fights to avoid bans on neonics, among their most profitable products. From covering up study results to suing the European Commission for earlier restrictions on their bee-killing pesticides, people power still prevailed.
Now, with the momentum of the EU ban on neonics still fresh, we have a big chance to push Canada to do the right thing for the bees.
Tell Canada to enact a ban of all bee-killing neonics now.
Thanks for all that you do,
Angus, Amelia, Emma, Wiebke and the team at SumOfUs
