We have a right to know what we’re eating and how it’s grown.

Dear PAOV,

Despite public opposition, the United States Department of Agriculture approved Intrexon’s genetically engineered (GE), non-browning apple. This apple is now being sold on Amazon as dried apple snacks — and nowhere on the package does it disclose that this product is genetically engineered.

We deserve to know what’s in our food and how it’s grown. Demand that Amazon reject unlabeled GE apples.

Americans are increasingly questioning the industrial food system, but federal officials seem unable or unwilling to step up accordingly.

Families want to know what’s in their food and how it’s grown — they want a choice. Up to 80% of the non-organic products on our shelves now contain GE ingredients, many of which have been engineered to tolerate increased pesticide use. By stocking unlabeled GE products, Amazon is denying consumers their right to know.

Speak up! Amazon needs to hear from all of us — we have a right to know what’s in our food and how it’s grown.

There are plenty of reasons to want to know what we’re eating, and this choice should rest with families — not retailers like Amazon, or biotech companies and their lobbyists.
