Bill C-76

Hi Paov, I have some good news for you: Canada’s ethics committee has just officially recommended that political parties be subject to privacy laws, based on the committee’s investigations into the Facebook data scandal.1

Their recommendation is a great... step towards fixing this, but there’s still a major hurdle ahead.

The new election reform bill currently being rushed through parliament does not make political parties subject to privacy legislation.2 And we’re running out of time to make sure the bill is reformed before being adopted.

That’s why I’m asking people across Canada to urgently message their MPs about this important issue.

Message your MP about privacy

Canada is one of the only Western democracies with no rules for how political parties treat private data. This makes us more vulnerable to outside influence of our elections, and reduces public trust in political parties.

That’s why so many privacy experts agree: political parties should follow the same privacy rules that they apply to companies.3

MPs will be debating this bill after the summer break, so let’s make sure they can’t ignore us and keep rules that favour themselves over the privacy of ordinary people in Canada.
