A,

An explosive BBC documentary is sending us a clear warning: if we keep letting greedy palm oil companies destroy the rainforests, orangutans will go extinct.

While you are reading this right now, swathes of pristine rainforest are being cleared in Indonesia to make way for palm oil, devastating the homes of orangutans, and in the process orphaning hundreds of baby apes.

If we don’t act now, our children and grandchildren will only know orangutans from picture books. Extinction is not reversible. Once the orangutans are gone, they’re gone for good.

But it’s not too late, A. We can turn this around with your help.

Will you please make a small monthly gift to help clean up the palm oil industry today?

The palm oil industry is destructive. Palm oil ends up on your supermarket shelves and in about half the products from snacks to cosmetics.

In Borneo, an island shared by Indonesia and Malaysia, an area of forest the size of a football pitch is being destroyed EVERY 47 seconds. As forests are cleared, greenhouse gas emissions skyrocket, fuelling climate change.

In the last 16 years, Borneo lost more than half its orangutan population.

Many workers in the palm oil industry are exploited: they’re paid little or nothing at all. Workers don’t have access to proper safety equipment, and are exposed to highly toxic chemicals on a daily basis. Children have been found to be working on these plantations.

We need to work harder than ever before to change the way things work -- to push for the needs of our planet and our communities to be put above corporate profit.

Making a monthly donation is the most powerful form of support you can give. It'll mean we can take on corporate power for years to come.

Your ongoing support will expand the work to transform the palm oil industry: together we can think big, plan with confidence, and act quickly when crucial moments call for it. We’ll keep up the pressure big household brands like Pepsi through on-the-ground actions, at important shareholder meetings, and using press and social media until they do the right thing.

Campaigning against the biggest corporations in the world costs money -- we may never have as much money as them, but if each of us donates a little, we can become powerful enough to do this.

This is urgent. Will you please make a small monthly gift to help clean up the palm oil industry?

We have the power to change things -- we the people make up the majority. Companies can only do this as long as we let them -- because they depend on our participation to survive and function.

SumOfUs would not be able to carry out the mission of putting people over profit without your support. As a people-powered organisation, we rely on members like you to keep these campaigns going on the issues we all care about -- until we win.

Because of SumOfus members like you taking action together in the past, we’ve pushed some of the biggest companies in the world to adopt responsible palm oil policies, like Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Taco Bell.

The more we can depend on regular donations, the more time we can spend running and winning campaigns.

We’re 100% independent. We take no money from government or corporations -- we run almost entirely on donations from SumOfUs members like you. This lets us do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done.

Can you please make a small monthly gift of whatever you can afford today to help keep this going? We have to act before it’s too late.
