Minister Petitpas Taylor: Ticking Lyme Bomb in Canada. Fix Canada's Lyme Action Plan Now!

A quick bite from an infected tick is all it took for thousands of people across Canada to become infected with Lyme disease. As the tick population explodes across the nation, more and more Canadians are at risk.

Getting a tick on you is easy. A simple walk in the grass or time spent gardening can do it. Your pets can bring them into your house. You can get them from the schoolyard or a park.

Yet critics say the government’s plan to address Lyme disease “fails to take real action, has minimal funding, and fails to protect Canadians from Lyme disease.” Canadians Concerned About Lyme Disease started a petition calling on the government to scrap the current Lyme disease framework and develop a plan that recognizes the seriousness of the threat.

Critics note that many people continue to be denied proper medical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Some are even leaving the country to receive adequate treatment and paying thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses for it – putting more and more Canadian families in financial jeopardy.

Nationwide, over 4 million Canadians report experiencing or knowing someone who has been diagnosed with Lyme disease. Canadian scientists believe that by 2020, 80% of the people living in Eastern Canada (including Manitoba) will be living in areas populated by ticks. Ticks are also rapidly spreading across Western Canada. Bottom line: all Canadians are at risk.

As Canadians Concerned About Lyme Disease say, time is ticking – the next bite could be yours. Sign and support their petition today calling on the government to scrap their current framework, and develop a new plan to tackle the Lyme disease threat today.
