A viral video surfaced in July 2017 of a shark struggling and thrashing as it was dragged by a high speed boat. The boaters are heard laughing in the video as the shark's body is ripped apart by the force of the water. Graphic photos online show the extent of the trauma endured by the shark.After a months long investigation by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Comission, Michael Wenzel and Robert (Bo) Benac were been charged with two felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty and a misdemeanor count of illegal method of take. Charges were dropped for a third accomplice.
We are asking Assistant State Attorney Aaron Hubbard at the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office to seek the strongest penalty for this outright abuse. These men are repeat animal abusers. Photos can be found online of these individuals torturing a pelican in addition to other animals. They must be held accountable this time. As this case has drawn national attention, the outcome will send a message to the public. That message should be that animal cruelty laws don’t only apply to house pets and should be taken seriously.
The next court date is a Disposition Hearing on August 21, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. before the Honorable Mark Wolfe in Tampa, Florida. Hillsborough County Assistant State Attorney Aaron Hubbard is prosecuting this case and his office has informed us any letters expressing may be directed to his office and will be presented to Judge Wolfe at time of Sentencing.
