Dear friends and supporters,
In June, we filed a joint complaint with the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) calling for an immediate investigation into discriminatory street checks by the Vancouver Police Department.
Today, the Vancouver Police Board will hear the VPD's response to our complaint, and the BCCLA will be there to share the details with our supporters.
Earlier this week, the VPD issued a report on street checks that outlines recommendations for the Board to adopt. Along with UBCIC, we've requested that the Board conduct further independent studies into this practice that document the experiences and effects of street checks on racialized communities.
As this issue moves forward, we'll be sure to keep you updated, and if you haven't already, follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
Sincerely,
The BCCLA team
P.S. Take action today to ensure an end to discrimination in policing. Sign our petition to demand a provincial policy on street checks.
