Guess what we've been up to r1 ...

We're out in the world this week!

Deputy editor Jimmy Thomson and photographer Matt Jacques went to the abandoned Giant Mine site outside of Yellowknife — Canada's second-worst environmental liability — to see for themselves what one of the country's most contaminated sites looks like.

The billion-dollar cleanup will take down 100 buildings, decontaminate arsenic-laden water and even scrub some of the soil clean of toxic chemicals.

Meanwhile, reporter Judith Lavoie is in Wood Buffalo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site (photo courtesy of Louis Brockner/Sierra Club BC). Pushed to the brink by oilsands development and dams upstream on the Peace River, Canada's largest national park has been threatened with being placed on the ignominious "World Heritage in Danger" list.

Those stories will be coming soon, so stay tuned! For now, keep scrolling to see the great stories we brought to you this week.

By Jacinda Mack and Loretta Williams

Finding safe routes across melting Arctic ice with new tech and Inuit knowledge

By Jimmy Thomson

One in 12 people surveyed in Nain, Labrador, fell through the ice in 2010.

“People were afraid to travel on their traditional trails...People were afraid to use the ice.”
