[Sjsall] upcoming events and calls for support

  • Print

Dear Friends of SJS,

Some great upcoming events and calls for support:

Refugee Support Request:

The Kalmo Refugee Support Group is doing an Online Auction & Raffle November 18th - December 8th to raise money to help Marwo Abdi reunite with her family. We have received over 30 donated items with 15 more promised. Some of the items are for services located on ‘vancouver island’ but others are for items that can be shipped anywhere. Raffle tickets are $1 each so that people of many incomes can participate. Some examples of items are - beaded earrings, winter farm box, massage sessions, an executed will by a lawyer, a visit to the Medicine Horses, and a custom botanical tattoo.

Marwo is from Somalia and she and her family were displaced by the war there in 1990 which is still ongoing. Marwo grew up in a refugee... camp and came to Canada through a WUSC (World University Service of Canada) scholarship. Her mother, brother, and two cousins (one is a 10 year old child) are still living in a refugee camp and we are supporting Marwo to privately sponsor them to come to Lkwungen/W̱SÁNEĆ territories (aka ‘victoria’). In order to do this, the government requires we raise $55,000. We are over 60% of the way there and the immigration applications have been provisionally accepted. For more info about Marwo and her family: https://kalmovictoriabc.wordpress.com

How you can help:

1. Share the attached poster (.pdf format), which describes the event and explains how to participate, and encourage others to do the same. If you are part of relevant FB groups please consider sharing there too. You can use the writeup about Marwo above to encourage people to participate.

2. Invite FB friends to join the public group where the fundraiser is taking place, https://www.facebook.com/groups/kalmoauction/ (this FB group is specific to this fundraiser so it won’t sign people up for ongoing updates).

3. For people NOT on FB - share the following links:

For more info on how this fundraiser works see tinyurl.com/kalmofun

To view the auction and raffle items go to tinyurl.com/kalmobid

4. Once the bidding opens on Nov 18, share to your social media page(s) the individual post(s) of any specific items you think your friends might be interested in. All posts are public so can be widely shared. Encourage other folks to share too.

5. Tag in FB friends or share with them specific items that you think they might be interested in, for themselves or as gifts.

We want to acknowledge that this fundraiser is inspired by the Onaman Collective’s Auction for Action, https://www.facebook.com/groups/1139537812807939/ which raises money for Nimkii Aazhibikong, an Anishinaabe language camp for youth and elders. You can check out their page any time to get an idea of how a Facebook auction works, and if you get this before Nov 15 (when their current auction ends) you can place bids on their incredible items.
