Dear Paov,

You and Canadians like you - from coast to coast to coast - value the oceans and marine life that surround this bountiful country. Our life-sustaining oceans play a cherished role in our identity, and drive our thriving marine-based economy.

It comes as no surprise that humans and resource development are having devastating impacts on marine ecosystems and wildlife. What is surprising however, is the continued lack of legal protections in place to ensure meaningful and lasting marine protection. Canada must act immediately before it's too late.

Will you give $5 a month to support strong legal protection for our oceans?

West Coast Environmental Law is hopeful, and you should be too. Our dynamic team, made up of marine lawyers and scientists, is using their knowledge and expertise in environmental law, marine science, and campaign strategy to develop and implement strong legal standards for marine protected areas that align with international conservation efforts, restore marine ecosystems and provide lasting legal protection for threatened species.

This could be a game changer. To date, only a tiny percentage of Canada’s oceans have been protected. And it’s hard to believe, but there are currently areas designated as ‘protected’ that actually offer zero protection from oil and gas exploration – with some explicitly allowing it.

However, industry is pushing back against stronger legal safeguards, lobbying in favour of weak marine protected areas that allow harmful human activities within their boundaries.

West Coast’s Marine Team is at the centre of a national dialogue to secure stronger ocean protection. We are working tirelessly with governments, communities and Indigenous peoples to establish strong legal standards that will close the loopholes in Canada’s ocean laws and provide more meaningful protection for marine protected areas.

The tide is turning - but we can’t do it without you.

Please donate as much as you can today for strong legal protections to save marine species and the ecosystems they rely on.

The whole world watched as a southern resident orca mother named Tahlequah carried the body of her dead calf for 17 days in a dramatic and heartbreaking “tour of grief” along the south Pacific coast. Just weeks later, this critically endangered killer whale population lost another young female.

Killer whales and other marine species are facing increasing pressure – creating strong marine protected areas is one way to help keep their habitats “stress free.”

Our oceans are under stress, but there is hope – and now is the time to act. In joining us, you have a real chance to affect change and ensure the waters you cherish are protected through law.

Paov, I invite you to contribute as much as you can.
