We are looking for high school students, teachers, and interested members of the public who would like to contribute their ideas to the project. We are very pleased to welcome four new steering committee members to the team: Lisa Kadonaga, Scott Mellett, September Smith and Yaqiong Wang.
In 2019 we want to do more public outreach and mobilization. We want people to feel supported to make sustainable energy choices in their own lives and inspired to support their elected representatives (at all levels) to make bigger moves toward energy sustainability.
We are supporting the City of Victoria and the District of Saanich to achieve their 100% renewable energy by 2050 target for their communities. And we are encouraging other local governments to adopt the same target.
We are also reaching out to high school students through YIP (Youth Involvement Project), educating grade 9 through 12 students on climate change and energy, and also linking them up with sustainable energy businesses for their work placement requirements.
Look for us at Car Free Day and other community events. Stay tuned for notice of our “pub nights” (or “coffee house nights”). For example, on March 7th, we will give updates on the new EfficiencyBC incentives for home energy retrofits (including more money for heat pumps!).
We hope to see you at one of our events, and we love to hear from you – so please drop us a line.

Vancouver Chapter - Volunteer Onboarding Night The Vancouver Chapter is taking a new approach to bringing on new volunteers. Our first volunteer onboarding session this year held on Jan. 24 with about 30 participants! Chapter Chair, Erin Quon, and Board Member, Arman Mottaghi, detailed the goals of the BCSEA and specifically that of the Vancouver Chapter, what was done in 2017/2018 and communicated the vision and volunteer plan of 2019. Each Project Manager (PM) presented their initiative and the ask for volunteers.
Projects for 2019 include:
  - Women in Sustainability Mentoring Night (WISE) / PM Selina Liu / May
  - Hackathon / PM Arman Mottaghi / Autumn
  - Solar in Africa / PM Kenny Yuen / Ongoing
  - Community outreach and local initiatives / Max Melchior / Ongoing

This exploratory workshop will build a greater dialogue between those in the mathematical sciences and the clean energy sector.
The Solar Africa project is in the process of recruiting volunteers.
The project champion is long time BCSEA member, Dr. Henry Mwandemere. Henry's goal for this project is to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #5 on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls and #7 on ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all for poor communities in rural Africa.
Volunteers will learn about the challenges poor communities in developing countries face not having access to clean and reliable energy. We will also learn about (and collaborate with ) leading organizations who currently address these energy issues in poor communities and understand the different methods and approaches on achieving renewable energies. Volunteers will also have opportunities to network with one another and leaders in the green industry.
Interested folks looking to gain a foothold into the green industry, expand their green experience, develop leadership skills or to simply observe and learn about this important issue are welcome to join by contacting This email address is being protected from spambots.
