Paov --

Yesterday I did an interview with the CBC’s BC Today radio show about the Canadian Institute for Health Information’s (CIHI) latest report on wait times in Canada. [1]

The good news is that BC is one of the few provinces where wait times are going down for surgeries such as hip and knee replacements, radiation therapy, and cataract surgery.

After years of calling for action on wait times, your work is paying off.

Almost exactly one year ago, the BC Government announced its surgical strategy that included many of the solutions BCHC members like you have been calling for.[2] We are already beginning to see results.[3]

Can... you chip in to help us build on this momentum toward improving wait times?

We still have a long way to go. During my interview, several people called in to share painful stories about themselves and loved ones who are still waiting too long for surgeries. Indeed, today’s CIHI report shows that -despite real progress- BC’s wait times are still among the longest in the country.

The province’s surgical strategy is working. Now we need to make sure that the government follows through on the deeper systemic changes needed to modernize our surgical system so that we fix wait times for the long term. Changes such as centralized intake, assessment, and triage are key to ensuring we have a more efficient approach to surgery that is patient-centred and evidence-based.

Yesterday afternoon, listening to people from around the province talk about how wait times are negatively affecting their lives, it was crystal clear that we can’t let up until everyone can get the care they need when they need it.

We need your support now so that we are able to continue the important campaign and advocacy activities needed to ensure the BC government remains committed to the changes that are critical for true, long-term decreases in wait times.

Will you help us continue this important work by donating to the BC Health Coalition today?

P.S. It’s clear that the previous government’s patchwork approach of short term injections of funding to deal with urgent backlogs, expensive and risky contracts to private for-profit clinics, and lack of system-wide modernization only saw wait times grow. Today’s report shows comprehensive, evidence-based action on reducing wait times in the public system is working. Help us build on this momentum.
