April is here and we hope you’ve been enjoying the longer days and the warmer weather! April brings with it a great deal of activity here at BCSEA. We are excited to be sharing news, upcoming events from BCUC hearings, the Cool-It educational program and our local chapter successes!
Today is the day more than 193 countries celebrate our beautiful planet by promoting environmental awareness and protection. Here at BCSEA we try and treat every day like Earth Day by providing education, awareness and community for the advancement of sustainable energy innovation and policy. Please support our efforts.

The Victoria Chapter held its first members event on March 7th at Gorgeous Coffee. Elena Dopfer of City Green told us about all the latest incentives for energy efficient home improvements and we saw a film about air pollution created by the “Nature of Things”. Attendance was fairly good and a number of homeowners showed up with questions about how to make their homes more energy efficient. The Victoria Chapter will be doing another evening event soon, so look for that, and also come visit us at our tables at Car Free Day on Douglas St on June 16th, and at Canada Day at the Gorge. KAMLOOPS CHAPTER NEWS
Tim NashOn March 20th, the BCSEA Kamloops Chapter hosted an event called The Power of Sustainable Investing, in partnership with Transition Kamloops, Thompson Rivers University Sustainability Office and the speaker, Tim Nash. Read about how and why we should be investing with our values in mind. We’re delighted to be able to share the videotaped presentation too.
Read More Here BCSEA Chapter Chair Cheryl Kabloona Receives Exemplary Service AwardOn Wednesday, April 10, our Chair, Cheryl Kabloona was awarded the Exemplary Service Award by the City of Kamloops, alongside a small group of remarkable members of the community. Cheryl's leadership on raising awareness about the climate change challenges we are facing as communities and as a global community have led to many worthwhile projects in Kamloops, which brought sustainable energy into the spotlight. The board of the BCSEA Kamloops Chapter has seen Cheryl’s vision for a more sustainable future materialize into many productive partnerships and community campaigns.
We could not be prouder of our Chair and more hopeful to pursue the (often challenging) path of inspiring people in our community to commit to a better future that employs renewable energy sources while leaving fossil fuels in the ground.
Congratulations, Cheryl, and thank you for your leadership!
OKANAGAN CHAPTER
A Sustainability Manufacturing Hub The Okanagan Chapter continues to activate sustainable energy promoting “A Sustainable Manufacturing Hub”, a forum on the “Future of Energy in the Okanagan”, and the formation of an independent Sustainable Energy Task Force throughout this year. The chapter is focusing on speeding up the community’s capacity for a changeover to renewables, and collaboration is one key they are using for bringing this into reality.
Their representative, Erik Hrabovsky, will sit on a delegation going to Vernon City Council this month, side by side with Sustainable Environment Network Society, Sunfire Systems, and many experts residing within the community. “The delegation, led by Barry MacDougal, will be presenting a possible future to the City of Vernon that situates Greater Vernon as the already growing sustainable manufacturing hub.” Erik states, “With Tekmar, all of our solar PV companies, and the recent Magnesium Oxide plant in Lavington, the promotion and accessibility of these things are crucial for meeting our climate targets.”

That's a Wrap in Comox This year Cool It worked with four schools in region, thanks to generous sponsorship from the Comox Valley Regional District. The classes put in an amazing effort in the climate challenge, and managed to complete a whopping 1,820 climate actions to reduce their environmental footprints over the four week challenge. If they continue their actions for the year we project they will save 82.535 tonnes of C02e from being released into the atmosphere. That's the equivalent of taking 17 cars off the road, or recycling 3,601 trash bags of waste instead of putting it in landfill.
Students taking Climate Action in SummerlandBCSEA is delighted to be working with First Things First Okanagan and the District of Summerland to deliver our Climate Leadership Training program to four classes in Summerland this Spring.
