UVIC ECOCAR 2 TEAM SEEKS COMMUNICATION VOLUNTEERS

EcoCAR 2: Plugging In to the Future, is a three-year collegiate engineering competition, and the only program of its kind. Established by GM and the U.S. Dept. of Energy, this competition challenges 15 universities across North America to reduce the environmental impact of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, without compromising performance, safety and consumer acceptability. Imperial Metals is proposing an open pit copper mine on Catface Mountain (Chitaapi) located within Clayoquot Sound and... on Ahousaht First Nation Territory. This event brings community-based land defenders to speak about their vision and actions to protect their lands and water from mining.

CCCBE Speaker Series—SEEING LIKE A SOUND?: NATUAL RESOURSE MANAGEMENT AND PROPERTY RIGHTS IN CLAYOQUOT SOUND

In 1993 Clayoquot Sound became a symbolic battleground over the controversy of clear cutting. The area witnessed one of the largest acts of civil disobedience in Canadian history. By the end of the decade, however, First Nations, local communities, environmental groups, corporate interests and governments sought ways to tackle problems in a more participatory manner. In this talk, Dr. Martin Bunton considers the recent shifts in resource management in Clayoquot Sound in light of the lessons learned from a growing interdisciplinary body of literature on common property regimes.

FOOD FOR THE FUTURE: FAMILY DAY RALLY TO SAVE THE AGRICULUTRAL LAND RESERVE

Feb 10th, Legislature Building, Victoria

February 2014 marks the 40th birthday of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), created to protect farmland across BC for agriculture. Only 5% of the landbase of our mountainous province is protected in the ALR, and now the BC Government is considering drastic changes to erode the reserve and the autonomy of the commission entrusted to protect it. CHANGING GEARS - SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION EXPO

The BC Sustainable Energy Association and partners present a day of information on sustainable transportation options and ideas. Will features displays and presentations from local organizations, governments and local businesses on understanding the carbon footprint of transportation, re-designing streets and urban spaces for people not vehicles, developing infrastructures to support "active transportation", improving the reach, diversity and comfort of transit options and electric vehicles.
