Hi PAOV,

As winter descends with its crisp air and frosty stillness, at RAVEN the season is a time to celebrate community and a reverence for the natural world.

Heiltsuk councillor Jess Housty sat down to reflect upon what your support means to her Nation. Housty, who is raising her two children in Bella Bella on the central coast of B.C., reflects on past victories, with an eye to the future.

“Our culture and our identity as a community is so rooted in respect and reciprocity, stewardship and taking care of each other and the lands and waters. And one of the really beautiful things that's starting to coalesce now is relationships pulling together in a way that really gives traction to the goals and ideas that are rooted in those strong Heiltsuk values.”

Back in 2014, thousands of supporters just like you joined forces with Heiltsuk Nation (and six other Nations) to achieve what then seemed impossible: stopping the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline and tankers project.

Reflecting on that incredible win, Jess shared that, “in the moments when things were really challenging, being able to remind ourselves how many people were standing with us always gave me so much strength."

One of the most significant things you do as a RAVEN donor is steward a vibrant natural world by supporting Indigenous Peoples when they take to the courts to defend their territories. Monthly donations are a vital pillar in the stability of the organization, and ensure the important work of raising legal defence funds for Nations across Canada can continue. Now, we’re asking you to step up. Please join our Circle of Allies to provide tangible, sustainable support for RAVEN’s campaigns.

Requests by Indigenous Nations to support their legal actions are increasing. Yet: the ability to take on more campaigns largely depends on organizational capacity. Though we watch costs, and have a small (but mighty!) team, in the end it takes people to build the successful campaigns that have become RAVEN’s trademark. We share your goal to support as many Nations as possible to access justice and defend their rights, territory and our shared environments. Will you
become a monthly donor in order to extend the circle of support, and stand with Nations that are defending our common future?

This year’s goal is to sign up 50 new monthly donors by the end of 2019 and we’re almost half-way there! Will you help to move the needle, and commit to reconciliation and climate justice? (Fun bonus! A limited edition RAVEN toque will arrive in your mailbox if you sign up at $20 a month or more.)
