Dear Paov,
I’ve been anxiously watching social media for a week now. RCMP are mobilizing on Wet’suwet’en territory 1,000 km north of Vancouver to remove Indigenous land defenders from the path of the Coastal GasLink pipeline.
The land defenders need your solidarity now from all over Canada and the world.
A year ago, heavily-armed RCMP launched a military-style operation against these peaceful protestors — now they’re poised to do so again. Can you take a moment to call BC cabinet members and demand they stop that from happening? Your call is even more impactful if you are a constituent of one of them so be sure to mention it.
Last year, BC passed legislation to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which requires the free, prior and informed consent of nations whose territories are impacted by megaprojects like Coastal GasLink. The UN is also calling for a halt to construction on the pipeline until consent has been given.
