Until the COVID-19 pandemic, BC Hydro had been adamant that it would file its 2021 long-term Integrated Resources Plan with the BCUC by the end of February 2021. However, in a July 29 2020 briefing to the IRP Technical Advisory Committee, BC Hydro said it contemplates a September 2021 filing date. The next day, the BCUC initiated a proceeding to determine the IRP filing date. Read more.
Breaking News: Bill 17 Stalled August 14, 2020
Bill 17, the Clean Energy Amendment Act, 2020, will not go to second reading in the Legislature. Energy minister Bruce Ralston reportedly hit the pause button after Green Party MLAs who hold the balance of power in the Legislature refused to support the bill. On August 3, 2020, Powerex, BC Hydro’s electricity marketing subsidiary, publicly released a previously confidential “100% Clean Energy Standard Discussion Paper” dated October 2019. The proposal, submitted to the BC Government’s Phase 2 Comprehensive Review of BC Hydro, recommends that the government adopt a commitment to serve 100% of its annual demand with clean electricity. Powerex says this would help BC trade in the US market that increasingly favours premium-priced clean electricity products. More on this discussion paper.

Message From the BoardMeet our New Treasurer - Diana Sollner
The Board has kindly allowed me to write this month’s 'Message from the Board' to introduce myself to all of you. First of all, thank you to the many members who have warmly welcomed me to BCSEA.
My name is Diana Sollner. I have worked professionally in the environmental space for over 25 years. Throughout my career I have strived to find ways in which heavy industry can do its business in a way that works within the fabric of ecosystems. Personally, I am interested in passive energy and water treatment systems to help reduce my own energy and carbon footprint.
My experience as a business owner is the most pertinent to the role of Treasurer. I lead the financial affairs of two private businesses. I have also been part of a team that oversaw the financial aspects of a charitable organization. I have an MBA from the University of Toronto and I am certified as an independent board director by Corporate Directors International.
I look forward to meeting you at future events, as pandemic rules permit, and working with all of you in helping BC be a sustainability leader. Please feel free to reach me at.
CHAPTER UPDATES Vancouver Chapter
REnA Biogas Project Update REnA’s mission is to combat poverty in Africa by educating remote communities about renewable energy and by introducing them to renewable technologies.
The project also aims to achieve two key underlying United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
Goal #5 - to achieve equality and empower all women and girls
Goal #7 - to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

EN-Roads Climate Policy SimulatorOn July 29th, volunteers of our Vancouver Chapter conducted a webinar inviting interested sustainability professionals to participate in a game-like challenge utilizing the EN-Roads simulator. Read more about this up and coming technology!
Kamloops ChapterThe City of Kamloops has invited a representative from the BCSEA Kamloops Chapter to sit on the 18-member Advisory Group for the Community Climate Action Plan, which is in development. We’re delighted that we will be represented by Gisela Ruckert, who has a Masters in Sustainability and a long history with BCSEA and other community organizations. Here's a picture of Gisela with her 2014 electric Smart car, one of the first EVs in Kamloops.
Okanagan Chapter The Okanagan's EV Classic-Car show, lining both sides of 2 downtown Vernon blocks, hoods up and glamour galore, is not happening this year. Since Covid-19 is still limiting our gatherings to 50 people, both the City of Vernon and Terry Dyck (Okanagan Chapter Vice Chair) felt this event would attract a much larger attendance. As we continue to watch the health of our community, we look forward to upcoming events! Stay tuned, join, volunteer!
