Until the COVID-19 pandemic, BC Hydro had been adamant that it would file its 2021 long-term Integrated Resources Plan with the BCUC by the end of February 2021. However, in a July 29 2020 briefing to the IRP Technical Advisory Committee, BC Hydro said it contemplates a September 2021 filing date. The next day, the BCUC initiated a proceeding to determine the IRP filing date. Read more.
Breaking News: Bill 17 Stalled August 14, 2020
Bill 17, the Clean Energy Amendment Act, 2020, will not go to second reading in the Legislature. Energy minister Bruce Ralston reportedly hit the pause button after Green Party MLAs who hold the balance of power in the Legislature refused to support the bill. More information here.August 14, 2020
On August 3, 2020, Powerex, BC Hydro’s electricity marketing subsidiary, publicly released a previously confidential “100% Clean Energy Standard Discussion Paper” dated October 2019. The proposal, submitted to the BC Government’s Phase 2 Comprehensive Review of BC Hydro, recommends that the government adopt a commitment to serve 100% of its annual demand with clean electricity. Powerex says this would help BC trade in the US market that increasingly favours premium-priced clean electricity products. More on this discussion paper.
