UPDATE Your contribution to the 2021 BC budget

This month's 2021 budget announcement saw ongoing provincial investments in health care, including funding for long-term care, increased surgical capacity, and a renewed commitment to primary care. Read our full budget response HERE.

While some crucial priorities raised by BCHC in our budget submissions remain unaddressed, the budget clearly shows the concrete impact of our coalition. Our work in advocating for public health care continues to be as critical as ever as we enter our second year of pandemic response. It is work that is only possible because of your ongoing support. Thank you for making this work possible!

This past month we launched our new online membership management system. We hope this will make it easier for us to stay in touch with you as members and get you involved so we can continue to grow our collective impact. Ask your MP to champion national long-term care standards

On April 27th, we joined provincial health coalitions across the country to call for long-term care national standards. Watch our virtual action video HERE, and take action by sending a letter to your MP HERE.

Sign up for the Canadian Health Coalition's Pharmacare lobby

The Canadian Health Coalition is looking for BC constituents to take part in a targeted pharmacare. Volunteers will be paired with a team leader and prepared for meetings at training sessions on May 6. Lobby days will be May 10-11. Click here for more information. Note the April 28 deadline has been extended.

OPINION Paid sick days not included in federal and provincial budgets

Paid sick days are an essential COVID-19 recovery measure. "Workers right now today are making the untenable decision to go to work because they're worried about paying the rent or the overdue Visa bill," explains BC Federation of Labour President Laird Cronk. "We need to take that economic barrier off the table". Both federal and provincial budgets this month failed to include paid sick days, and BC Premiere John Horgan has since signalled he will bring in a paid sick day program. READ MORE.

Mazdak Gharibnavaz

MAZDAK GHARIBNAVAZ
(he/him)

Mazdak is an immigrant and a community organizer. He is a UBC graduate, a former elected steering committee member of Vancouver Tenants Union, and has worked on grassroots campaigns for digital privacy and free expression, climate change, democratic reforms, labour rights and housing justice.
He's passionate about the expansion of public health care institutions, and has argued for more of our institutions in society to emulate our public health.

PUBLIC HEALTH NEWS, UPDATES, & RESOURCES

  • The pandemic is disproportionately impacting racial minority communities. While BC does not collect disaggregated race-based data, new data presented by the province shows that of the thirteen communities with the highest infection rates, eight are communities where at least one third of the population is South Asian.   • BC's community-based seniors' services agencies have met a significant need while pivoting during the pandemic. The United Way of the Lower Mainland released a report that includes recommendations for strengthening this essential sector. Read the report HERE.
  • As BC begins to see lower new daily COVID-19 cases, experts continue to leverage data for evidence-based public health response. Read more HERE.
  • A recent study found that the rapid transition to telemedicine for patients with Type 1 diabetes did not significantly impact access to care, but this may not be true for historically marginalized equity-seeking groups. READ MORE.
  • Ageism is a social determinant of health with global dimensions. Read The Lancet's article on the Global Report on Ageism HERE.
  • Dr. Penny MacCourt, chair of Action for Reform in Residential Care BC, appeared on behalf of BCHC on On the Coast to call for national standards in long-term care. Listen to the segment HERE.
