Hi Paov,
I grew up west of Calgary, with the Rocky Mountains on my doorstep. They inspired my love of nature from a young age.
That’s why it’s meant so much to me to see Albertans stand up to defend them.
When Premier Jason Kenney wanted to remove a long-standing policy limiting coal mining in the eastern slopes of the Rockies, a huge coalition of local ranchers, Indigenous people, environmentalists and even country music stars forced them to back down.
But several proposed coal mines remain in the area. Tent Mountain on the BC-Alberta border is the largest — designed to remain just under the threshold for a federal review. Will you tell Canada’s environment minister that’s unacceptable?
At 4,925 tonnes of coal daily, it stops short of the 5,000 tonnes that would trigger a federal impact assessment process. Australian proponent Montem Resources clearly doesn’t want to have to answer tough questions about the mine’s impact on the global climate, species at risk or Indigenous rights.
