Last week, we held a public webinar to mobilize our community around the appeal for the Cambie case, set to be heard on June 14th at the BC Court of Appeal. To continue building momentum, we have launched a pledge campaign to defend public healthcare.

Paov, it remains as important as ever that we mobilize to keep wining on this case. Here's a reminder of the top 5 reasons why the victory last September was so important:

  • An expansion of private pay healthcare would not reduce waits in the public system. In fact it could make them worse.
  • Private pay healthcare undermines equitable access to care.
  • Urgent and emergent care is currently provided in a timely manner. Where waits exist, there are evidence-based ways to reduce wait times through innovations within the publicly-funded healthcare system.
  • Entrenching private pay healthcare would benefit mainly the wealthy and healthy, while harming the rest of the population by undermining the public healthcare system.
  • Evidence from around the world shows that expanding privately financed healthcare would make our healthcare system less sustainable overall, so it doesn’t make sense from a health policy or fiscal perspective.

A loss at the BC Court of Appeal would invalidate the historic victory at the BC Supreme Court affirming the importance of public health care. Signing the pledge shows you are standing up to defend public health care. Our goal is to make it stronger, not take two steps backwards by losing infrastructure and resources.
